BURLINGTON, VT—There is still a primary election to win, but one of the Democratic candidates for Lt. Governor is already firing back at the Republican in the race. Senator David Zuckerman issued this response after hearing Randy Brock’s podcast last Friday.

“I was stunned to hear Randy’s so-called plan the other day. Vermonters deserve more forward-looking and innovative approaches to building our economy and supporting middle-class families,” said Zuckerman. “Brock’s statement that he doesn’t want Vermont to be the first in the nation on any issue or legislation reveals a sharp contrast in leadership styles. Vermont has repeatedly served as the moral compass for the nation because our citizens are comfortable doing what is right. Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery, first to reject McCarthy’s attacks on civil liberties, and first to require GMO labeling.  I am so proud of the leadership role we have played and look forward to pioneering additional advancements,” said Zuckerman.

Brock’s approach to economic development is critically flawed according to Zuckerman. “Lowering taxes sounds great on the campaign trail but in reality, only the wealthy see the reductions while working people have to pay higher rates to make up the difference. The best way to stimulate the economy is to increase taxes on the wealthy so we reduce income inequality and keep more money in the hands of working and middle class families.”

Zuckerman highlighted four issues he will continue to work if elected.  “These are ideas that will move Vermont forward and boost the economy,” said Zuckerman. “We should:

Pass the Pearson-Pollina fair property tax plan so that those with high incomes also pay their property taxes based on income, thereby making the system equal for all.

Close the capital gains loophole completely and stop discriminating against men and women who work for a living.  Use the revenue this generates to bond for road and bridge repairs – one of the easiest ways to quickly stimulate our economy.

Continue to push for Universal Health Care. Health insurance expenses are currently bankrupting families, towns, and businesses and we must create an efficient and fair system.

Pass Cannabis reform and bring this estimated $150 million underground market into our economy. Not only will this generate revenue, which we can apply to substance abuse programs, law enforcement, and rural economic development, it will regulate the system and reduce points of access for teens.”

“These are concrete plans we could lead on which would benefit all Vermonters and jump-start our economy,” said Zuckerman. “I look forward to debating any and all of these issues with Brock after the August 9th primary.”
