Sen. David Zuckerman, who won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, has also secured the backing of the Progressive Party.

Zuckerman won the Progressive Party primary, defeating Boots Wardinski, whose name was on the ballot, by winning more votes as a write-in candidate than Wardinski received at the polls.

According to Secretary of State Jim Condos, Zuckerman had 228 write-in votes to 150 votes for Wardinski. The results will be certified Wednesday, he said.

Zuckerman has run as a Progressive/Democrat in his most recent two races to represent Chittenden County in the Vermont Senate.

He easily won the Democratic nomination Aug. 9, defeating House Speaker Shap Smith and Burlington Rep. Kesha Ram.

Zuckerman will face Republican Randy Brock in the November election.

Zuckerman said he wanted to win both nominations to avoid the “three-way conundrum” where a Democrat and a Progressive split the left vote.

“It certainly was our goal to run with both labels,” Zuckerman said Tuesday.

He said he and party leaders worked to identify voters who would write in his name. A candidate is not allowed to appear on two primary ballots.
