The board of directors for the Vermont division of the National Education Association endorsed Dave Zuckerman for lieutenant governor Thursday, declaring he would be the best choice for students, schools and families.

“Whether it’s ensuring that all children get an outstanding public education or insisting that working men and women are treated fairly, David is consistent in his approach while never giving up the fight,” said Martha Allen, the Vermont NEA’s president, in a statement.

The organization’s board interviewed both Zuckerman and Randy Brock, the Republican lieutenant governor candidate, last week and had them fill out a questionnaire. Zuckerman is the nominee for both the Democratic and Progressive parties.

The union’s endorsement will include a donation of $4,000 to his campaign, the maximum allowed contribution in statewide races in Vermont, according to Darren Allen, a spokesman for the organization. The union has 12,000 members.

In a statement, Zuckerman thanked the Vermont NEA for its recommendation.

“I have long respected and admired the work Vermont-NEA’s educators do every single day in our local classrooms,” Zuckerman said. “I am honored to have their backing, and will continue to fight for working people, for students, and for unions as lieutenant governor.”
