My vote for equality

Dear Friends,

Seven years ago today the Vermont House overrode Jim Douglas’ marriage equality veto. “Zuckerman” is the last name called during a roll call so as it happened I got to cast the 100th vote, the vote that secured this groundbreaking victory.

That vote stands out among the thousands I have cast over my 20 years in Montpelier, which is why I am incredibly proud to tell you about the leaders from that effort who are backing my campaign. For those of you who weren’t following the marriage equality struggle closely, Susan Murray and Beth Robinson were the legal team that won the Baker case which led to our civil union law. Stacy and Nina were one of the three couples who were plantiffs in that case.

“Marriage equality for same sex couples is no longer controversial in Vermont.  Back in 2000, when Beth Robinson and I were trying to get legislators in Montpelier to pass a “gay marriage” law, most legislators refused; but not David.  From the beginning David was an outspoken supporter of full equality.  He was always willing to speak out on our behalf, and he worked hard to try to convince other legislators to support equal rights for gay couples.  David accomplished this in a friendly, thoughtful, and inclusive way.  He was a great ally, and an enormous support during that difficult time.” Susan Murray, Esq.

Securing the rights and responsibilities of marriage for all Vermonters was only possible because of the many voices that came together and had the determination to stand up for justice year after year. At the time Vermont was leading the nation, and now our lesbian and gay sisters and brothers have marriage equality across the country.

“During the decade that we worked to gain the right to legally marry, David Zuckerman was a strong ally inside and outside the Statehouse. He worked tirelessly to bring people to the table to discuss this issue and find common ground. On behalf of so many gay and lesbian friends across Vermont we thank him for his consistent and vocal support.” Stacy Jolles and Nina Beck

Today is a day for celebration and reflection but there is still so much to be done for the LGBTQ community. Nationally even one state codifying discrimination is too much. As your next Lieutenant Governor I will continue to be a strong ally, to engage citizen activists, and to ensure Vermont is a state where our communities find strength in their diversity. The Lieutenant Governor is also a Vermont ambassador for the country. As your Lieutenant Governor, I will speak out against the misinformation, denigration and defamation against the LGBTQ community.

Please join me in celebrating the past and working together to ensure all may legally celebrate love together across the land.
